Head Prefects for 2017/8 announced

Larne Grammar School are proud to announce the selection of the Head Prefects for the 2017/18 academic year. Each of those chosen were nominated by the staff due to their contribution to the academic and extra-curricular life of the school.

DSCF3685Rebekah Boyd, formerly of Larne & Inver Primary School, has been appointed as Head Girl. Rebekah achieved an incredible 8 A*s and 2 As in her GCSE examinations last summer, winning the Dean Fair Memorial Prize, Hamill cup and subject prizes for Music, Business Studies, Science and English. She currently studies Biology, Chemistry, Business Studies and Nutrition and Food Science at AS Level and hopes to study either Business or Science at university.

Rebekah also contributes heavily to the school outside the classroom. The many activited she participates in include helping younger pupils through mentoring, supporting her year charity, taking on the role of a prefect and even managing to fit in the odd spin class. Her greatest achievements, however, have undoubtedly come through the music department where she is a member of senior, chamber and choral choirs/groups who performed in the Candlelit Carol Service and 'A Night at the Movies' concert.

Outside of School Rebekah trains in piano, singing and performing arts, frequently completing grades and performing in festivals and shows. A particular highlight of 2017 was being able to perform at the Waterfront in one of her favourite musicals, 'Footloose'. Following on from this she has been cast as a 'Ronette', one of the leading roles, in 'Little Shop of Horrors' which will be performed in the Mac Theatre this summer.

On her appointment Rebekah said: "I am honoured and overwhelmed to have been appointed by the pupils and staff as Head Girl for the next academic year. I am very grateful for the opportunity to give back to the school after all the help, direction and opportunities it has given me over the last six years and hope I will be able to help develop the school further for the present and future pupils."

DSCF3683The Head Boy for 2017/18 will be Jonathan Farquhar, formerly of Cairncastle Primary School. Having won the Year 12 prize for Technology and Design and the Robert Gordon Memorial prize he chose to study Biology, Geography, ICT and Technology and Design with the ultimate goal of studying to become a Primary School Teacher at Stranmillis University College.

Jonathan contributes extensively to the extra-curricular life of the school. This includes being a member of the 1st XV Rugby team, being involved in Athletics, participating in the school's Scripture Union, having a lead role in Calamity Jane the musical and singing in the Senior Choir during Year 13. Since beginning Lower Sixth Jonathan has also been a part of the Mentoring Team and has served on the Charity Committee.

Outside school Jonathan is currently pursuing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh award having already gained both the Bronze and Silver awards. He also manages to find the time to be involved with the Boys Brigade in Gardenmore Presbyterian Church, where he has also been a leader at Youth Club and is on the PowerPoint team.

On his appointment Jonathan said: "I am honoured, proud and delighted to have been elected the post of Head Boy in the upcoming academic year. I have enjoyed my last six years at Larne Grammar School so much and the school has given me so many opportunities to discover and improve my gifts. My desire in the year ahead is to continue being a good role model to my peers and to represent the school well as I carry out my duties of Head Boy. I always hoped that my last year at Larne Grammar School would be memorable but being honoured with this position will make it even more special."

Next year Rebekah and Jonathan will be ably supported in their duties by Chloe McIlroy, Natasha McGowan, David Balmer and Joel Fekkes who have been appointed as their deputies.

Principal, Mr Wylie, was delighted to have appointed such outstanding candidates to these important roles. “I would like to congratulate our new Head Boy, Head Girl and deputies. The position of Head Prefect is the ultimate honour that the school can bestow on its pupils and members of the new team encapsulate all that is good about the pupils of Larne Grammar School. They are an excellent example to their peers and I look forward to working with them in the year that lies ahead," he said.

The first formal duty that the group will have to perform will be to meet the incoming Year 8 pupils at the Year 8 Induction Evening in June. However, the real task will begin after the summer break with a number of key engagements taking place in the winter term.

All of the staff and pupils of Larne Grammar wish to congratulate these pupils on their appointments. We all look forward to working with them in the year ahead.
