Head Prefects announced for 2018/19 academic year

Larne Grammar School is proud to announce the selection of the Head Prefects for the 2018/19 academic year. Each of those chosen were nominated by the staff due to their contribution to the academic and extra-curricular life of the school.

DSCF4345Meg McCubbin, formerly of Cairncastle Primary School, has been appointed as Head Girl for the next academic year. Meg achieved an incredible 8 A*s and 2 As in her GCSE examinations last summer, winning subject prizes in English Literature and History. She currently studies English Literature, History, Business Studies, Performing Arts at AS Level and hopes to study English at university.

Throughout her time at Larne Grammar School Meg has been an active participant in the extra-curricular life of the school. The many activities she participates in include helping younger pupils through mentoring, being a member of the school’s Editorial Team and finding the time to organise our annual Christmas talent show, ‘The Big Bash’. Her greatest achievements, however, have undoubtedly come through the music department where she is a member of senior choir, chamber choir and choral group and recently took on the lead role of Sandy in the school’s production of ‘Grease’.

Outside of school Meg trains in drama, theatre and singing, where she has recently been awarded a distinction in Musical Theatre. When she is not singing Meg also takes part in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and hopes to complete her Gold award this summer.

On her appointment Meg said: "It is a real honour to have been chosen as Head Girl for the next academic year. I have gained so much from my time at Larne Grammar School through both academic work and extra-curricular activities and would like in my final year to give something back through being a positive role model for every pupil in the school. I hope to inspire and encourage all pupils to make the most of their time at Larne Grammar School and take full advantage of all opportunities given to them.”

DSCF4349The Head Boy for 2017/18 will be Luke McKay, formerly of Larne & Inver Primary School. Like Meg, Luke too achieved an outstanding 8 A* and 2 A grades in last year’s GCSE examinations. He is currently studying Maths, Chemistry, Biology and ICT at AS Level with the ultimate goal of studying Dentistry at The Queen’s University of Belfast.

Luke contributes extensively to the extra-curricular life of the school. This includes being a member of the 1st XV Rugby squad, captaining the 2nd XV team, being a member of the School Council, attending Scripture Union and participating in peer mentoring. During the recent school production of ‘Grease’ he lit up the role of Sonny LaTierri with his unique charm and wit.

Outside school Luke is currently pursuing his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award having already gained both the Bronze and Silver awards. This has all come through his membership of 1st Larne Boy’s Brigade which he has attended for the past thirteen years.

On his appointment Luke said: "I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed to the position of Head Boy as it is an incredibly prestigious role and I feel that I can bring a great level of enthusiasm and effort to it. I am looking forward to working with the senior staff, the senior prefects and my fellow head prefects to do the best job possible in the coming school year. I hope that I will grow as a person as a result of the role and that I can repay the faith and trust put into me by my teachers and my peers by appointing me to this position.”

Next year Meg and Luke will be ably supported in their duties by Nicola McAuley, Ellen Starrett Bence Tasnadi and Jakob Holst who have been appointed as their deputies.

Principal, Mr Wylie, was delighted to have appointed such outstanding candidates to these important roles. “I would like to congratulate our new Head Boy, Head Girl and deputies. The position of Head Prefect is the ultimate honour that the school can bestow on its pupils and members of the new team encapsulate all that is good about the pupils of Larne Grammar School. They are an excellent example to their peers and I look forward to working with them in the year that lies ahead," he said.

The first formal duty that the group will have to perform will be to meet the incoming Year 8 pupils at the Year 8 Induction Evening in June. However, the real task will begin after the summer break with a number of key engagements taking place in the winter term.

All of the staff and pupils of Larne Grammar wish to congratulate these pupils on their appointments. We all look forward to working with them in the year ahead.
