Head prefects appointed for 2019/20 academic year

Larne Grammar School is proud to announce the selection of the Head Prefects for the 2019/20 academic year. Each of those chosen were nominated by the staff due to their contribution to the academic and extra-curricular life of the school.

Jenna McCarlie, formerly of Whitehead Primary School, has been appointed as Head Girl for the next academic year. Jenna achieved an incredible 8 A*s and 2 As in her GCSE examinations last summer, winning subject prizes in Science, Physical Education and Technology and Design. . She currently studies Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Technology at AS Level and hopes to study Dentistry at Queen’s University, Belfast or Trinity College, Dublin.

Throughout her time at Larne Grammar School Jenna has been an active participant in the extra-curricular life of the school, particularly in the sporting arena.

Having been a member of schools 1st XI hockey team since year 11 Jenna played a pivotal role in the Super League winning hockey team in 2017. Since then she has gone on to represent Ulster Hockey U16 and U18 teams in interprovincial tournaments, and has been selected to represent Ireland U16 and U17 hockey teams playing in various tournaments such as the 6 nations which includes Germany, Holland, Belgium, Spain, and England.

Among her many accolades Jenna can also list being a four time member of the Schools Cup winning sailing team, winning her respective fleet twice and becoming junior and youth lady champion, and being selected to represent the U15 north-east area board netball team for three years.

Outside school Jenna has represented both Northern Ireland and Ireland sailing teams in various competitions such as the World Championships in France and Italy and national events all across the UK and Ireland. She has also found the time to achieve her Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards with Girls Brigade.

Commenting on her appointment Jenna said: “I am delighted and extremely honoured to have been appointed the position of Head Girl for the 2019/20 academic school year. It is an incredibly prestigious role and I am excited to face the challenges that lie ahead in the next year. I am immensely proud to be chosen to represent the school and I hope to give back to Larne Grammar for all the wonderful opportunities I have been provided with that have shaped me into the young high-achieving girl I am today. I look forward to working with senior staff and my fellow head prefects to carry out my role to the highest standard, whilst being a positive role model and inspiring my fellow pupils to take advantage of everything our fantastic school offers to reach their full potential.”

The Head Boy for 2019/20 will be Matthew Clenaghan, formerly of Olderfleet Primary School. In last year’s GCSE examinations Matthew was awarded 9 A*s and 1 A with a Level 2 Certificate in Space Science Technology as well as subject prizes in RE, Classical Civilisation, Spanish, Maths, English and Science. He is currently studying Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Physics at AS Level with the ultimate goal of studying Medicine at either Queen’s University, Belfast or Trinity College, Dublin.

Matthew contributes extensively to the extra-curricular life of the school. In particular he has been involved the music department as a member of the senior choir, chamber choir, boys choir and orchestra. He is also a regular attender at Scripture Union, where he holds a place on the committee, and has represented the school in both the NEBSSA and District athletics competitions.

Outside of school Matthew has achieved his Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards and is currently pursuing his Gold Award through Boys’ Brigade. As well as this he plays piano and cello and has recently been accepted into the Ulster Youth Training Choir.

On his appointment Matthew said: “I am extremely honoured and grateful to have been chosen as Head Boy and I am excited to face the new challenges and opportunities that are to come. My time at Larne Grammar School has been greatly rewarding; I wouldn’t be where or who I am now without all the amazing support given to me by my peers and, of course, the staff and all the effort they’ve put in over the years. I hope that my role will enable me to be a role model to and encourage other pupils to reach their full potential, and that in working alongside prefects, staff and my fellow head prefects, we can positively impact the school in the upcoming year. “

Matthew and Jenna will be assisted in their duties by Luke Clarke, Jamie Maybin, Abigail Park and Courtney Murray who have been appointed as their deputies.

Principal, Mr Wylie, was delighted to have appointed such outstanding candidates to these important roles. “I would like to congratulate our new Head Boy, Head Girl and deputies. The position of Head Prefect is the ultimate honour that the school can bestow on its pupils and members of the new team encapsulate all that is good about the pupils of Larne Grammar School. They are an excellent example to their peers and I look forward to working with them in the year that lies ahead,” he said.

The first formal duty that the group will have to perform will be to meet the incoming Year 8 pupils at the Year 8 Induction Evening in June. However, the real task will begin after the summer break with a number of key engagements taking place in the winter term.

All of the staff and pupils of Larne Grammar wish to congratulate these pupils on their appointments. We all look forward to working with them in the year ahead.
