Larne Grammar School Pupil Excels on International Football Duty

LGS Year 12 Pupil Matthew Carson was recently called up to represent Northern Ireland U16’s as they continue preparations for this year’s Victory Shield competition.  This is his first inclusion at this level but follows previous selection for NI U13’s, U14’s and U15’s, and is just reward for his consistent performances for club team, Glentoran.  The squad travelled to Finland on Monday 16th September where they faced Finland U16 Schoolboys in two challenge matches in Urjala and Eerikkila respectively.

Matthew was selected to start at left back for both fixtures and was delighted to contribute to the team’s victory in the second fixture with two outstanding goals.  Commenting on his first experience with the squad, Matthew said, ’I was delighted to be called up to the squad and honoured to represent my country at this level.  Travelling with the team and support staff provided a great insight into life as a professional player.’

Northern Ireland U16’s will play Poland at home on Monday 14th October, at Shamrock Park, and Wednesday 16th October, at The Oval, in preparation for the defence of the Victory Shield in Wales at the end of the month.

Matthew provided an insight into the Northern Ireland U16 camp with his diary entries below:

DAY 1

We met in Belfast for training, then after training we travelled from Belfast to Dublin and stayed in the Maldron Hotel overnight

DAY 2

We woke up at 3am to be able to get our plane at 5:50am from Dublin to Frankfurt.  Then we got a flight from Frankfurt to Helsinki in Finland.  We left the airport at 2pm and arrived at the hotel at around 4pm.  When we got there, we had a training session at night then dinner and bed.

DAY 3

We woke up for breakfast at 9:30am then went for a walk before going back to our rooms until 1:30pm.  We left for the match at 2:30pm for a 5pm KO. We drew this match 1-1.

DAY 4

On Day 4 we completed a recovery session in the pool and a dip in the lake because this day was in between the two matches.

DAY 5

We had a tactical session in the morning before leaving for our game at 3pm for the 5pm KO.  We won this game 3-2

DAY 6

We travelled home and arrived home around 8pm.
