Larne Grammar School Pupil continues impressive form on the pitch

Year 12 pupil Matthew Carson continued his impressive run of form on the football pitch as he represented Northern Ireland U16’s at the Victory Shield in Wales.  The squad travelled to their base in Wrexham on Sunday 27th October to make final preparations before the tournament commenced on Monday 28th.  Over the course of the week NI faced tough opposition and extremely competitive fixtures against Wales, Scotland and Republic of Ireland.  Matthew started each game at left back and performed admirably throughout the week.  Below is a brief report of each game:

Monday 28th October

Northern Ireland v Wales

NI were dominant in the first half creating a number of good scoring opportunities and went in at half time with a 1 goal lead, scored by NI & Tottenham centre forward Jamie Donnelly from a penalty.  In the 2nd half, Wales wrestled back control of the game and equalised.  In the end, NI held out with the game ending honours even.

Final score 1-1

Wednesday 30th October

Northern Ireland v Scotland

This was a game that was very evenly contested with the only real clear cut chance falling to an NI player who, after the ball rebounded off the post, unfortunately hit his shot over the bar from 6 yards out. All square in this one also.

Final score 0-0

Friday 1st November

Northern Ireland v Republic of Ireland

This was another even contest with ROI taking the lead midway through the 1st half when their forward headed the ball past the NI keeper into the net.  Within 10 minutes of ROI scoring, Matthew Carson picked the ball up on the right and drove at the defence, playing the ball in behind the central defender then picking it up again just outside the 18-yard line to slot a neat finish into the bottom left hand corner.  NI created a few chances towards the end of the game but were unable to score the winner.

Final score 1-1.

This was an invaluable experience for the team in what was a very intense but enjoyable week.  It should stand them in good stead as they build towards further internationals next year.

The trophy was shared between Scotland and Wales who both ended the week on 4 points.  NI remained unbeaten in 3rd place on 3 points and ROI finished 4th on 1 point.
