Larne Grammar School Literacy Leaders Bathroom Project

Literacy Leaders at Larne Grammar School have recently been involved in an exciting project using literacy to empower the pupils of LGS and promote positive mental wellbeing.

The video below showcases the amazing work undertaken by the Literacy Leaders:

LGS Literacy Leaders Spokesperson Sophie Farquhar explains what the project involved:

“Our interpretation of literacy – beyond the classroom we see the impact that words have on each other.  We posed the question, where do you go when you’re sad?  The toilets being the most popular response. So we started thinking about how we could take this information and use literacy in a positive way to make a change, a ‘problem that needed to be solved’.  Of course we couldn’t change that people were going to go to the toilet when they’re sad, but we at least wanted to have a hand in potentially lifting their mood before they leave to motivate them. “

“We saw a video online of an American school which painted all of their bathrooms with bright colours and positive quotes.  So, we started researching into this idea, discovering that ‘Looking at warm, bright colours, such as red or pink, releases dopamine — known as the “feel-good hormone”.  We also started making mood boards, gathering our favourite quotes and getting carried away most of the time.  ‘We didn’t want our plans to end in disaster’.  With the massive contribution of all our team members, and Mrs Herron, we took one day over our Halloween holidays; and created a space of self-expression and hopefully a space where pupils feel empowered by all forms of literacy.”

Mr Wylie, Principal of Larne Grammar School, commended the work of the Literacy Leaders, both in terms of their ongoing efforts across the school to promote and support the development of literacy skills, and specifically in relation to this project they have undertaken in the junior toilets.  He paid tribute to the leadership and initiative they had shown from the moment they first met with him to “pitch” their idea through to the completion of the project.  It was the perfect example of a group of pupils coming up with an idea to improve the school environment and then taking the responsibility to “be the change [they wanted] to be in the world”.
