A Level: Year 13 & 14

GCE History is a challenging but enjoyable subject for students with suitable English skills and an interest in exploring important historical events.  The current 'A' Level requires students to take examinations at the end of Year 13 and Year 14.

Year 13: Advanced Subsidiary (AS)

AS1 – Historical Investigations and Interpretations: Germany, 1918-1945.  The 1 hour 30 minute external examination is taken at the end of Year 13 and is worth 20% of the final A Level grade.  In this module pupils study the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Nazi Party between 1918-33. The opposition to the Nazi regime is scrutinized, including the many plots to remove Hitler from power.

AS2 – Conflict and Change in Europe: Italy's Quest for Great Power Status, 1871-1943.  The 1 hour 30 minute external examination is taken at the end of Year 13 and is worth 20% of the final A Level grade. In this module pupils will consider the problems associated with unification, the consequences of World War I on Italian society, the development of Mussolini’s dictatorship and his disastrous foreign policy and role in World War II.

Year 14

A2:1 – Change over Time: Clash of Ideologies, 1900 – 2000.  The 1 hour external examination is taken at the end of Year 14 and is worth 20% of the final A Level grade.  The module examines the relationships between the Soviet Union and the Western powers across the 20th century.

A2:2 – Historical Investigations and Interpretations: Partition of Ireland, 1900 – 1925.  The assessment is by means of a 2hour 30 minutes external examination at the end of the academic year and the paper is worth 40% of the final A Level grade. This module considers the key developments in Unionism and Nationalism, with all its divisions, rivalries and legacy of violence. Pupils will encounter such giants of early 20th century Ireland as Carson, Craig, Redmond, Pearse, Collins and De Valera.

CAREERS IN HISTORY:

Given the skills you will develop through history starting at key stage three and beyond, employers of all kinds will be very interested in you. In addition to teachers, archivists and museum curators, those who have studied history often find themselves working in occupations such as finance and management, consultancy work, radio and television, journalism, law, publishing, the arts, the Civil Service and other branches of public life.
