Description of Department:
The Mathematics department seeks to provide a learning environment which will stimulate and encourage pupils by producing thought provoking and challenging work. We have high expectations of our pupils and aim that each will achieve their full potential.

DSC_8100Key Stage Three (Years 8-10)
Pupils are split into four classes of mixed ability and follow the Key Stage 3 programme of study under the main topics Number, Algebra,Shape, Space and Measure and Handling Data.

Key Stage Four (Years 11 & 12)
Pupils are split into five classes and take GCSE Mathematics at either Foundation or Higher level, with the majority taking Higher.  There is no coursework element to the examination.  The T3 module content is taught in Year 11, with an opportunity to sit the examination for this module in June of Year 11.  Pupils can resit T3 in January or June of Year 12 or sit the T2 module if it is felt that T3 has been too difficult.  Modules T5 and T6 are studied in Year 12 depending on the performance and ability of the individual pupil.  High achievers are given the option of studying T4 module content before starting the T6 module.  They will have the opportunity to sit T4 in January of Year 12.  All pupils need to sit a completion paper in module T5 or T6 in June of year 12.

Further Mathematics can also be taken at GCSE level providing the opportunity for pupils to study mathematics to a higher standard.

Years 13 & 14DSC_8116
Pupils can study AS Mathematics in Sixth form and A2 Mathematics in Upper Sixth in a modular course which includes Pure Mathematics and Mechanics. Further Mathematics and Scholarship Mathematics are taught when required.

UKMT Maths Challenges
Each year pupils of all ages have the opportunity to compete in the UKMT Individual Maths Challenges.

The UKMT Challenges are lively, intriguing multiple choice question papers, which are designed to stimulate interest in maths in large numbers of pupils. The three levels cover the secondary school range 11-18 and together they attract over 600,000 entries from over 4,000 schools and colleges.
