KS3 Biology
BIOLOGY IS THE STUDY OF LIVING THINGS
Teaching and Learning
In the Biology department we aim to help pupils learn about, enjoy and respect living things. We do this using a wide range of techniques which are designed to take account of individual learning styles and to challenge pupils to actively participate in class.
Homework and Assessment
• Effort and achievement are rewarded through the school merit system, and a system of departmental merits.
• Pupils are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning.
• Regular homework is set in line with the school homework policy. At key stage 3 this will be once a week and at Key Stage 4 twice a week
• Tests are given at the end of each unit of work. Roughly every 5/6 weeks at Key stage 3 and every 3/4 weeks at Key Stage 4.
• School examinations take place in January of each year at Key Stage 3 and in January and June at Key Stage 4.
Preparation and Examinations
Prior to both internal examinations pupils are supplied with revision materials to them help structure their revision and assess their learning and understanding. Advice is given on revision techniques and revision sessions are arranged. Pupils can consult with their class teacher at any time for advice and support.
Fieldwork
Fieldwork is an important part of the study of Biology. We make use of the school grounds to study the soil ecosystem at Key Stage 3.
